What I Have Done (SATB)
A narrative mash-up of “Amazing Grace” and “House of the Rising Sun.”
SATB, T solo, a cappella
First performed by Cantus in 2003, this mash-up of the two famous songs “Amazing Grace” and “House of the Rising Sun” is an innovative way to explore the journey of temptation and redemption. The harmonies are familiar, but the mixture of the two songs together makes this a truly unique piece in the choral repertoire.
Composer’s Notes
When I wrote this piece for Cantus in 2003, it filled a spot in our narrative concert that referenced a life of sin but led ultimately toward redemption and forgiveness. The solo should be heartfelt and honest, and the last stanza should be a warm welcome as the narrator finds grace.
Text
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
Well, there is a house in New Orleans,
They call the Rising Sun,
And it’s been thae ruin of many a poor boy,
And God I know I’m one.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed
Oh mother tell your children
Not to do what I have done,
Dont spend your lives in sin and misery,
In the House of the Rising Sun.
Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
– John Newton, “Amazing Grace”
