Take My Hand
A rich, sentimental, and beautiful work with Scandinavian choral influence and a highly evocative text.
SATB a cappella
With deep influence from Wilhelm Stenhammar and the Swedish choral tradition, “Take My Hand” explores the importance of friendship, loyalty, and love as the years pass into the great beyond. Commissioned by Andrew Jacobson and Bellevue Christian High School, “Take My Hand” employs rich, expansive chords that flow like waves over a beautifully spun text by composer favorite, Robert Bode. Hours pass, days pass, years pass — a whole life passes. But what joy to take the hand of one you love as you traverse life’s path toward evening.
Text
And I will lift you
Across the golden mountains,
Into the morning.
Take my hand,
And when noon comes
We will run to the forest
Where the deer make their nest.
Take my hand
And we will whisper
With dragonflies
In the quiet afternoon.
Take my hand,
And, together,
We will board the old man’s boat
And cross the long slow river,
Toward evening.
— Robert Bode
