Healing Heart
A heart-wrenching journey from loss and pain to hope and healing.
SATB, piano
Commissioned by Amy Johnston Blosser and Bexley High School, “Healing Heart” was composed in the quiet woods of Bainbridge Island, Washington and explores the lonely path a heart may take from pain to wonder. Often allowing immense space and complete silence, the music partners with the poetry of Robert Bode to create a dramatic journey filled with dramatic turns and surprising colors. Requiring great imagination, empathy, and joy from singers, conductor, and pianist alike, the narrative effect of this choral work is palpable and worthy.
Text
In quiet breaths and
In the long, slow turn of seasons.
Here the pain of love’s arrow,
Once scarlet
Fades to memory.
Here the sigh of tides
And fall’s surrender into snow
Mark a white forgetting.
Here, layers of wonder
And the heart’s gentle song
Call us out again
into the morning,
into the light.
— Robert Bode
