The world says you can’t (Maria’s aria)
An aria from Computing Venus: Maria Mitchell expresses determination to continue her work with her students and empower women in science.
soprano, piano
From the opera Computing Venus, music by Timothy C. Takach, libretto by Caitlin Vincent.
Winner of the 2024 Domenic J. Pellicciotti Opera Composition Prize.
Computing Venus provides a glimpse into the life of astronomer Maria Mitchell, one of the earliest champions of women in STEM. The opera follows Mitchell’s efforts to cultivate the next generation of women astronomers, even as growing movements threatened to close the world of science to women forever.
In this aria:
Following the departure of her brightest astronomy students, Maria Mitchell expresses her determination to continue her work with those who remain.
Text
The world says you can’t.
But you can.
The world says you shouldn’t.
But you will.
You can.
And you will.
Without sorrys.
Or self-pity.
Without surrendering to doubt.
We all fail.
But we learn.
We all break.
But we grow.
We grow.
When forced back,
We resist.
We persist.
We are women working together.
And we do the work that must be done.
Together.
Venus in retrograde.
We’ll start with the semi-major axis. . .
