This powerful text is about those who guide us, who help us when we are in need. Homophonic writing is accented by voice pairs and also provides moments for the congregation to join in. Singing is a way that we praise, heal, nurture, and this anthem pays tribute to them. A beautiful fit for a church choir, the instrumental parts are easily added to the ensemble.

A heart that hears our grief,
an arm that bears the weak,
an ear that loves our voices,
a voice that calls us on.
The heart’s door is so easily closed
and the soul’s music stilled.
God knows our need and sends the saint,
so when we are heard, lifted, loved—
we are freed as saints ourselves.
A hand that lifts the thorns,
an eye that seeks the lost,
a voice that calls us ever on,
and a love that never dies.
Lord, bless these saints
who sing, and sing, and sing
their hymn that opens heaven.
