SSA, viola or cello, bells

A joyful and high-energy piece based on a tune from the American shape note tradition (Southern Harmony). Rhythmically active, supported by viola accompaniment, strongly melodic, includes canonic treatment and a change of key and counterpoint. Fun, loved by all, and a great opener or closer, excellent for choral festivals!

Composer’s Notes

A joyful piece, this work is based on a tune from the American shape note singing tradition from The Southern Harmony (1835), and a text from 1742. Rhythmically active, the altos and viola accompany the melody in the soprano; this evolves to canonic treatment in the second verse, and a change of key and counterpoint in the third verse. “Let Us Sing!” was commissioned by the Badger State Girl Choir, Kevin Meidl, conductor, in honor of Pope Benedict XVI, and received its European premiere at the Vatican in December, 2010 with a subsequent tour of Italy. The piece includes an alternate text and an interchangeable cello part.

Text

Children of the heav’nly King,
As we journey sweetly sing;
Sing our Savior’s worthiest praise,
Glorious in his works and ways.

Fear not sisters joyful stand
On the borders of your land;
Jesus Christ the Father’s son,
Bids us undismayed go on.

Lord courageously we go,
Gladly leaving all below;
Only Thou are leader be,
Always we will follow Thee.

– John Cennick, 1742

Alternate Text
Children of the heav’nly King,
As we journey sweetly sing;
Sing our Maker’s worthiest praise,
Glorious in his works and ways.

Fear not sisters, joyful stand
On the borders of your land;
Our Creator, God alone,
Bids us undismayed go on.

So, courageously we go,
Gladly leaving all below;
Only Thou are leader be,
Always we will follow Thee.
