Every Fire
An impressive, high-energy piece for TB singers with unisons, motivic development and smart divisi.
TTBB, piano
Takach has written an impressive, high-energy piece for TB singers. Conceived for a 9-12 grade TB mass choir, the piece uses unisons, motivic development and smart divisi to ensure that the music is accessible for young singers while being fulfilling for older singers. Coupled with a dramatic piano part, the combined result is spirited music that asks what might be within us? Who might we have the potential to be?
Composer’s Notes
The idea for this piece started with the proverb, and I knew I wanted to develop that line as a mantra over time, turning it into something that lives and grows as a fire might. I wrote the first four lines myself, giving this proverb some personal context, and opening the piece with a more contemplative statement before transitioning into the faster material to come. This transition is also accompanied by a meter shift as we move from a more thoughtful lilting feel to a driving 4/4, as the music takes on the shape of the fire and spreads upward in range and outward in canon.
A note on the text:
I came across this proverb in a fictional novel. In my research to figure out from which culture, people, or language it came, the most solid lead directed me to the Seneca people, but the folks I questioned responded with shrugged shoulders. And so, while this may have originated as a Seneca proverb, I’m simply crediting it as “anonymous.”

Text
Dig deep into yourself.
Find an ember–
A small piece of you.
Give it breath, give it life.
