We Are Lost, We Are Lucky
A reflective piece on the importance of friendship and our place in the universe. Homophonic writing with polyphonic voice pairs at the conclusion.
SATB, piano
Takach has captured the mystery of nature, of friendship and of the universe in this piece. Swirling piano writing amidst linear, reaching vocal lines paint an unearthly texture that casts a spell on the listener. The vocal writing, although harmonically unexpected at times, is accessible to the ear and lives well in the voice. This would be a welcome addition to any program about humanity, the universe, and our connections with each other.
Composer’s Notes
I’ve always admired Julia’s poetry, and this text is no exception. She describes so well the intimacy of friends at night sitting together, sharing secrets. Sharing their lives. The conversation is quiet and close, but they turn their gaze upward and outward, letting the vastness of the night sky open their hearts while also binding them close together. Julia talks about the circles in the poem, and this shows up in the music as well. It’s in the circling pattern of running eighth notes in the piano and in the repeated, swirling gesture as the choir sings “we are lost, we are lucky, we are drifting and drowning.” We are allowed to be unsure of ourselves, but as lost as we are we can still count ourselves lucky to be who we are, to have what we have.

Text
The asphalt wavers as we look skyward, follow
clouds that curtain the horizon, usher in night.
Later, we’ll build a fire, track sparks, watch
them dart. Amber and orange they become earthly
constellations, & we name them after lovers
we’ve lost, ships sleeping at the bottom of this
sea, childhood dogs that chased their tails,
circled like we do now. Our backs to the fire
we say what we think: we are lost, we are lucky,
we are drifting & drowning in a sea of stars.
