I Shall Not Care
Discovering that we will find our peace through our passing from this world to the next.
SATB Chorus with Divisi & Treble Soli
Winner of the Magpies and Ravens Emerging Composer Competition, this piece received its world premiere with Director Maza Zimmerman and the Afternoon Singers. “I Shall Not Care” is a moving piece about how we will be at peace with everything once we have passed on. Sara Teasdale paints a setting in this poem depicting the beautiful nature our loved ones left behind get to experience in that moment, but nothing compares to the rest and tranquility one feels after death. This work offers two beautiful treble solos along with a third solo arriving at the second climax. The chorus has moments of tense harmonics, flowing textures, and soaring vocal lines. Any concert themed around nature, life and death, or spring would be enhanced by this centerpiece.
Text
When I am dead and over me bright April
Shakes out her rain-drenched hair,
Tho’ you should lean above me broken-hearted,
I shall not care.
I shall have peace, as leafy trees are peaceful
When rain bends down the bough,
And I shall be more silent and cold-hearted
Than you are now.
-Sara Teasdale
