A Little While
As sea foam lifts from waves only to return once again to the ocean, we too never truly leave this world. We are always a part of it through the moments we shared together.
SA Chorus with divisi & Cello
“A Little While” was commissioned and premiered by Kristen Walton and the Riverside Polytechnic HS Choral Program in memory of their beloved mentor and friend, Bob Habereder. The text reflects on ocean waves and how sea foam is lifted into the air just as “they turn back to the nothingness that is their home”. It is symbolic to the way we are born and in the way we die, from nothingness to nothingness. But our spirit somehow lives on. Through each other, our “life will live in music” after we are gone. The music depicts these waves as the vocal lines lift into the air and settle back to their home of the sea. The cello is the spirit of the one lost, making their final lift into the sky before returning home.
Text
A little while when I am gone
My life will live in music after me,
As spun foam lifted and borne on
After the wave is lost in the full sea.
A while these nights and days will burn
In song with the bright frailty of foam,
Living in light before they turn
Back to the nothingness that is their home.
