Jayjaykar!
Shruthi Rajasekar
A triumphant celebration from the perspective of Christianity practiced in South Asia.
SATB, with percussion
Referencing the choral tradition of India and the musical forms of Hindu bhajan groups and Sufi Islam Qawwali worship, Rajasekar brings together multiple styles of communing with the Divine in Jayjaykar! Using text with permission from Pastor Anil Kant of India, Jayjaykar! is a triumphant celebration of the glory of Jesus Christ from the perspective of Christianity practiced in South Asia.
An audio guide that helps with pronunciation of the Hindi is included in your purchase.
Composer’s Notes
Percussionist: The dholak is a two-headed drum used in folk traditions across South Asia. If the artist is familiar with traditional dholak, dhol, tabla, pakhawaj, or mridangam accompaniment, they are welcome to deviate from the score or improvise something new. If necessary, this part can be played on other percussion instruments.
Slides: All of the slides should be brief, contained, and maintain fidelity to the rhythmic pulse of the piece. Slides over longer durations of notes should only occur after the initial note or chord is established.
Please see the included audio guide available for download for notes on pronunciation.
For performance: Feel free to invite the audience to participate in the claps from mm. 82-94!
