Easily the strangest song in Takach’s catalog, “Leave a Comment” sets fake internet comments to unique miniature songs, each subsequent song somehow upstaging the last. Requiring a healthy amount of theatrical investment from the performer (and a short vocal solo from the accompanist), the audience will love this addition to your program.
Composer’s Notes
I’m guessing that this needs a bit of explanation. Jocelyn Hagen and I run Graphite Publishing, and one of my duties is to monitor and accept the comments that are left in the review section for each piece. When we lauched this feature, so many spam comments came through that we installed a filter to keep them out and minimize the insanity. Fortunately, before we did that, I saved a few of the more interesting ones as a future compositional project, and this is the result.
One of the funniest parts for is the fact that so many of these comments ended with a plug for jerseys from China. It was a common enough sign-off that I thought I’d end each mini-art song with it (as well as female Viagra, which was also popular).
The performance of this piece requires a pretty serious buy-in from the performer – this won’t work if you park and bark. So lean into the jazzy gestures of the third song, and really own the Badly-Translated-Eastern-European-Pop-Song vibe of the fifth.
I do think that there very well might be more of this kind of work from me, but I’d have to find the right spam. And believe that I’ll keep looking.
And before you ask, the tempo marking “Runaway Donkey” doesn’t have any connotation. It just seemed to fit the particular craziness of that bit.
