“This Beautiful Speed,” commissioned for Cantus and their High School Residency program, focuses on the speed of our current world and society. Commenting on it through mantra-like repetition, coupled with a duet of soloists and a wide array of textures in the piano, this narrative-driven work will be a strong anchor piece to any advanced high school choir program and beyond.

Composer’s Notes

I took the poem to be about how fast our current society is living, so each section reflects on that a bit.
You have the first section excited about our speed of things, followed by a realization that nature is
around us, followed by a celebration of our connection to nature, and finally a return to our own speed but
questioning where we stand with it all. Make sure to keep this in mind as you create your own unique
musical interpretation!
