Melted Into Dreams
“We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep” – Barnett explores the ethereal in this excerpt of Shakespeare’s The Tempest set for a cappella divisi choir.
SSSAAATTTBB a cappella
This setting of Shakespeare’s iconic text transitions from Prospero’s valedictory speech to images of towers and palaces that are built and dissolved within extended phrases. At the end, the voices divide into 12 parts, shimmering in a myriad of colors.

Text
Our revels now are ended: these our actors
…were all spirits and
Are melted into air, into thin air;
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision
The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made of, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.
