I Know You
Sometimes we live in many half worlds, not fulling being our authentic self.
SATB Chorus with Divisi
Premiered by Choral Arts Initiative and Brandon Elliott, “I Know You” shares the story of the flying fish, caught between the world of water and the world of air. It is symbolic for anyone who feels they are not fully living their authentic life. This work features the duality of an ocean seascape where the waters are calm then suddenly chaotic. The flying fish must maneuver between water and air to fight for its life. You can hear this struggle with melodic lines being passed between the upper and lower voices before ultimately coming together for the climax of waves and winds that push the flying fish to safety. We often find ourselves in situations just like the flying fish, fighting for our life in many half worlds. But knowing that we are children of all worlds empowers us to find our truth in the lives we live.
Text
I HAVE lived in many half-worlds myself … and so I know you.
I leaned at a deck rail watching a monotonous sea,
the same circling birds and the same plunge of furrows carved by the plowing keel.
I leaned so … and you fluttered struggling between two waves in the air now …
and then under the water and out again … a fish … a bird … a fin thing … a wing thing.
Child of water, child of air, fin thing and wing thing …
I have lived in many half worlds myself … and so I know you.
