All People Are Like Grass
Somber words from Isaiah 40:6-8, with the chorale “Alle Menschen müssen sterben” as a counterpoint.
Aria for baritone, piano
Prophet Songs is a 24-movement oratorio for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and orchestra. Part I of the oratorio gives musical expression to many and sundry Old Testament prophetic voices, from Moses and Miriam to Malachi. Part II explores the various voices and perspectives found in the book of Isaiah. Throughout the work, the prophetic voices sing the mighty acts of God and call God’s people back from unfaithfulness, using threats of punishment, but also exuberantly rejoicing in the promises of God’s steadfast love.
In “All People Are Like Grass,” the somber words of Isaiah 40:6-8 are sung by the baritone soloist, with the chorale “Alle Menschen müssen sterben” used as a counterpoint.
The full piano/vocal score of Prophet Songs and the orchestral score and parts are available from the composer at timothyhoekman@gmail.com.
Text
A voice says: “Cry out!” But what should I cry? All people are like grass, their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers, the flower fades when God’s breath blows on them; the grass withers, the flower fades, but God’s word will stand forever.
