Blessing (Trumbore)
This sacred blessing implores us to use our time wisely, being “swift to love” and gladdening the hearts of those around us.
SATB, a cappella
This piece was composed as a gift honoring the Reverend Elizabeth Kaeton’s retirement from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chatham, NJ. The text for this work–really two separate texts, combined to form a unique prayer–was the blessing that Rev. Elizabeth Kaeton used to send off her congregation at the conclusion of each service.
This prayer combines a text by nineteenth-century Swiss philosopher Henri Frederic Amiel with the Doxology and suggests that we waste no time being kind to those around us.
This work is dedicated to the Rev. Elizabeth Kaeton and was premiered by Flower Mound High School Jaguar Chorale (Mark Rohwer, director).
Text
Life is short, and we do not have much time
to gladden the hearts of those
who make this earthly pilgrimage with us.
So be swift to love, and make haste to do kindness.
And the blessing of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit
be upon you this day, and always. Amen.”
— Henri Frederic Amiel and the Doxology,
as adapted by the Rev. Elizabeth Kaeton
