With text compiled by the members of the 2015-2016 Lake Superior Youth Chorus, “I Sing of the Northland” dramatically describes the rugged beauty of forest, lakes, and sky in the far Northland of America. These beautiful young students gathered their thoughts and wrote down what they loved about living in Duluth, MN and the surrounding Northshore area of Lake Superior. What results is a genuine and poignant, natural text set with long rolling melodies and approachable, enjoyable harmonies. A contemporary style piano accompaniment shines and the piece concludes full of joy and revere. A wonderful piece for young choir, or even a more advanced treble ensemble looking for a dramatic pastoral work with a sweeping, cinematic flare.

Text

Where can I feel alive and free as a bird learning to fly,
Soaring high into the sunset?

I sing of the sun shining over the water.
I sing of the snow falling onto the mountain.
I sing of the radiant colors of autumn.
I sing of the Northland, my beautiful home.

The wind blows strong amid the trees.
They sway and rustle and toss their colorful leaves.

Where can I feel the wild and never-ending waves
Beat on the dim and distant shore, crashing evermore?
So calm but powerful.

I sing of the sun shining over the water.
I sing of the snow falling onto the mountain.
I sing of the radiant colors of autumn.
I sing of the Northland, my beautiful home.

The bridge lifts high over-head.
The boats race fast and far down below.

People are running and laughing and swimming,
And playing and biking and fishing and skiing,
And jumping and singing and dancing,
And hoping for more!

I sing of the sun shining over the water.
I sing of the snow falling onto the mountain.
I sing of the radiant colors of autumn.
I sing of the Northland, my beautiful home.
