A Worshipper and a Man
The voice of God, portrayed first as loud, terrifying threats, then as a whisper in the heart.
SSATBB a cappella
A worshipper claims to hear the voice of God in lighting and thunder, accompanied by rumbling basses and sharp, stinging treble harmonies. A man interjects, claiming that the voice of God is heard in the heart, singing his declamation with luscious, rich harmonic shifts and warm, broad strokes of color.
Composer’s Notes
When I wrote this piece, I was intending to spend half the piece on each side of the argument. As the piece turned out, it was obvious that I wanted to spend more time with the second half, tipping my hand as to which viewpoint I sided with. It is quite telling to me that when the worshipper speaks, he shouts and is overly aggressive while the man, quiet in his conviction, causes us to lean in closer to hear what he has to say.

Text
The livid lightnings flashed in the clouds;
The leaden thunders crashed.
A worshipper raised his arm.
“ Hearken! Hearken! The voice of God!”
“ Not so,” said a man.
“The voice of God whispers in the heart
So softly
That the soul pauses,
Making no noise, And strives for these melodies,
Distant, sighing, like faintest breath,
And all the being is still to hear.”
