“You Carry Oceans Within”, the second in Paul John Rudoi’s award-winning choral set “Spheres of Influence”, takes the audience on a journey of love in a simultaneously galactic and intimate context. Comparing a loved one’s smallest elements with the vastness of space, this lush setting of Dailey’s gorgeous poem will leave your audience in love and speechless.
Composer’s Notes
This piece is expansive in scope but intimate in subject matter, so try and accomplish both simultaneously. Allow each line to flow interdependently of one another, supporting the larger view. Sing through letter E, so that you have an immediate and gradual fade-away from the apex of the piece. Make sure it’s always ebbing and flowing, always sounding like it’s living!

Text
Your every cell is a galaxy,
with its own ellipses and orbits, nuclei
like miniature suns lighting up your
insides. You carry oceans within,
comprised of water as you are,
your pulse the universe’s rhythm,
that interaction of gases and matter and heat.
So it’s no mistake when I tell you
your movements are tidal,
or that I want you close
because gravity is like that,
or that when I hold you I am holding the world.
