Ave Verum Corpus
An intricate, delicate setting of the famous Eucharistic hymn, complete with dance-like, flowing sections and romantic harmonic gestures.
SATB Choir and Organ or Semi-Chorus
Paul John Rudoi’s Ave Verum Corpus, from his Living Set “Well-Trodden Passages”, is an intricate, delicate setting of the famous Eucharistic hymn, complete with dance-like, flowing sections and romantic harmonic gestures. Advanced collegiate or professional ensembles will welcome the interplay between the two choirs, and less advanced church ensembles can enjoy the work with the second choir part as organ accompaniment.
Composer’s Notes
Ave Verum Corpus is reminiscent of Mozart’s setting. Consider a classical interpretation, focusing on the interplay between the choirs. Allow your tempi to flow based on the capabilities of the ensemble, always aiming for a legato, bel canto sound.

Text
Ave verum corpus, natum
(Hail, true Body, born)
de Maria Virgine,
(of the Virgin Mary,)
vere passum, immolatum
(who having truly suffered, was sacrificed)
in cruce pro homine,
(on the cross for mankind,)
cuius latus perforatum
(whose pierced side)
fluxit aqua et sanguine:
(flowed with water and blood:)
esto nobis praegustatum
(May it be for us a foretaste)
in mortis examine.
(in the trial of death.)
O Iesu dulcis, O Iesu pie,
(O sweet Jesus, O pious Jesus,)
O Iesu, fili Mariae.
(O Jesus, song of Mary,)
Miserere mei. Amen.
(have mercy on me. Amen.)
