Outshine
2-part mixed, piano
Written for Conspirare’s Songs of Connection project, “Outshine” declares a willingness and commitment to act for justice and equality even in the face of dissenting voices and oppression. Takach has set “Outshine” for 2-part voices with an ear for accessibility and has added a meaningful piece to the choral repertoire.
Composer’s Notes
In the summer of 2020 I wrote “Outshine” for Conspirare’s “Songs of Connection” project. Nervously, I tried something new and set about writing my own text for the song. The lyrics showed up as thoughts and words that had recently been occupying my thoughts. I thought about equality, privilege, platforms for change through speech and action, and how we all have a social responsibility to stand up against people who marginalize those who are different, whose voices are suppressed.
“Outshine” had a simple honesty to it, something I appreciate in choral music. I turned to Consortio.io to put together a group of choirs to help support the creation of this and a number of other different versions of the song.

Text
Maybe someday, we’ll find that love is enough
Maybe someday, we’ll find respect
Everyday we’ll fight with weapons of words
Fearlessly say we won’t concede
Our actions hold a mirror to
convictions we hold dear and through
it all faith keeps us strong.
And until then, stand.
And until then, insist.
Learn to affirm what is true.
Maybe someday our grace will outshine our fear
Maybe someday we’ll lead with love
We’ll see the day when hearts are open again
Everyday we’ll listen more
Stand your ground and testify
Give strength to the oppressed and find
Your voice. Give all you have.
And after that, prove.
And after that, believe.
Let out your light as a sign.
